THE UNISON FUND, CANADA’S MUSIC INDUSTRY CHARITY RECEIVED COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARD AT LIVE MUSIC INDUSTRY AWARDS FOR ITS IMPORTANT WORK IN THE PANDEMIC.
The work is far from over: The need for emergency financial support and mental health care services for the Canadian music community continues to grow.
TORONTO, ON – June 12th, 2023 – The Unison Fund - Canada’s music industry charity providing counselling and emergency financial support services to the Canadian music community for over a decade - has won the Community Impact Award at this year’s Live Music Industry Awards during Canadian Music Week in Toronto this past Friday evening. This award recognizes the impact that Unison has made to the Canadian music community, especially in the years following the pandemic.
In April 2022, Unison was allocated over $18.2 million dollars from The Government of Canada through the Canada Performing Arts Workers Resilience Fund (CPAWRF) as a way to help support the reestablishment of the Canadian live music industry. With the funding provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage, Unison launched the Live Music Workers Fund and distributed over $20M dollars in financial support to over 7,000 music workers across the country. Unison acknowledges the Government of Canada and the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage, for their support and recognition. Unison was grateful to be named as a recipient of this funding which was used to help support Canadian live music professionals sustain their career amid the continuing challenges and difficulties created by the pandemic. This funding came to a close on March 31, 2023, and as such Unison currently depends on generous donations to help keep music alive.
“We are incredibly honoured to have won this award, and are proud to be recognized for the work we do and the impact Unison has on the community. We wouldn’t be able to do the work we do without the help of our generous donors and industry partners, we are grateful for your help as we continue to provide support and services to those in need. Thank you to CMW, CLMA, and all of those who voted for Unison to win this award.” - Amanda Power, Executive Director, The Unison Fund
Industry support is also a cornerstone of Unison’s success and the organization has been grateful to benefit from several 5-year donation commitments from companies like The MRG Group, The Steele Family Foundation, Throop Family Foundation, Cadence Music Group, CCS Rights Management, MDM Recordings, Red Brick Songs, Starfish Entertainment, and True North Records.
In September 2022 the Slaight Family Foundation, a prominent Canadian private charity that supports multiple humanitarian and cultural causes, made a generous 5-year commitment of $10M to The Unison Fund. The generous donation will go towards the new Slaight Family Foundation Legacy Program that is uniquely designed to financially support retired individuals in the music community and/or those that experience long-term medical challenges.
The need from the music community for emergency financial support and mental health care services continues to grow. In order for Unison to continue making an impact and supporting the music industry, they need the help of generous donors. Please give today.
