Le Groupe de course Octane strengthens its commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility
Montreal, December 4, 2024 – Le Groupe de course Octane, promoter of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, is proud to continue its commitment to sustainable development initiatives, endorsing Formula 1's goal of carbon neutrality by 2030. With a new management team and renewed strategic thinking, Octane is pursuing a series of sustainable initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental footprint and promoting responsible practices at its events. These initiatives reflect the organization's determination to combine sport, innovation and sustainability, and inspire millions of enthusiasts around the world to follow suit.
OUR INITIATIVES :
Eco-friendly transportation
97% of event-goers already use environmentally-friendly means of transport: public transit, carpooling (including cabs) or low-emission rental services. And we continue to promote them.
Waste management
An ecocenter dedicated to waste management is installed on site, integrating sorting for general, organic and recyclable waste (paper, plastic, metal).
Recycling bins are available in the paddocks, spectator areas and Octane Village.
Renewable energy
Transition to hydroelectricity to power fan zones, reducing the use of conventional generators.
Integration of battery-powered generators for key operations, avoiding 26,730 kg of GHG emissions in 2024.
Food surplus management
In 2024, 11,369.2 kg of food were redistributed to local organizations, including La Tablée des Chefs (and other organizations), representing over 37,897 meal portions.
Biodiversity protection
Preservation of green spaces and enhancement of a rich local biodiversity around the track, including more than 650 species recorded to date on the Park's territory, with targeted actions such as the introduction of foxes to maintain the ecological balance.
Emissions reduction
Use of alternative fuels for air transport for the teams, reducing emissions by around 80% per flight compared with conventional aviation fuel.
Rework of the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada calendar starting May 2026, optimizing team travel and reducing transatlantic travel.
Development of ultra-efficient logistics, notably through remote distribution operations and optimized material flows.
OCTANE ADHERES ISO 14001:2015 CERTIFICATION
Through its various key initiatives, Le Groupe de course Octane has aligned its environmental practices with the requirements of ISO 14001:2015 certification, held by Bell, for all its promotional activities and events. Recognized worldwide, this standard attests to sound management of environmental issues such as emissions, water and waste management, and soil contamination. Octane's efforts, in collaboration with Bell, demonstrate a real commitment to taking concrete steps to reduce its ecological footprint and promote a sustainable future.
A NEW AGREEMENT WITH L’AGENCE DE MOBILITÉ DURABLE
In the same spirit of sustainability, Le Groupe de course Octane has awarded a mandate to L’Agence de mobilité durable, which will act as a neutral intermediary, collaborating with all the stakeholders involved in travel, such as public transport, bike-sharing, cab and VTC, municipal services, emergency services, etc. and many others. This collaborative approach will provide an overall picture of current challenges related to site accessibility, and enable us to develop effective, sustainable solutions. The objective of this mandate is to carry out a general logistical overhaul, which will transform the modes of access to the site by implementing innovative and adapted solutions. Le Groupe de course Octane and the L’Agence de mobilité durable thus intend to promote smoother, more inclusive and more environmentally-friendly mobility for years to come.
“ Every initiative we have put in place, from rigorous environmental risk management to our partnership with Tablée des Chefs, testifies to our desire to combine performance and ecological responsibility. The implementation of these various initiatives in the run-up to our 2025 event is a key step towards realizing our vision of an event committed to managing its ecological footprint while taking into account the needs and realities of all. As promoter of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, we are proud to contribute to responsible resource management by demonstrating in concrete terms that an event of this magnitude can and should care about the environment and the community.” – Sandrine Garneau, COO, Groupe de course Octane
